What Are Hose Clamps Used For?
Hoses
are used throughout the engine whenever fluid needs to be transported from one
location to another. Hose Clamps are used by your radiator and
your heater (which is technically part of the coolant system). Hoses are also
used by your power steering system and your brake system.
Because
the fluid in these hoses is under pressure, the hose ends must be secured to
inlets. Hose clamps come in handy in this situation. Hose clamps are quite simple, and
there are only two kinds. There are two types of screws: banded screws and
spring screws.
Banded Screws
The banded screw hose clamp is widely used in automotive applications, but you've probably seen them in other places as well. They are made up of a grooved metal band with a screw and a catch.
Spring Screws
A spring hose clamp is a little different. They are made of strong but flexible metal. They have two tabs built into them, one on each end of the circle. Automobile manufacturers use spring clamps on cooling system hoses because there is no better or less expensive way to apply tension to the hose regardless of its condition.
